Zion enjoyed a potluck dinner following the 10:30 service on Sunday, June 26 with Pastor Schmitt. Pastor Schmitt was ordained into the Pastoral Ministry June 23, 1991 in Willow City, North Dakota and served a dual parish in Willow City and Rugby for six years before coming to Zion in 1997. We all know he has lots of stories, for he can’t seem to stop telling them from the pulpit. We’re not even sure how many of those “Lake Beauregard” and “Flat Platte” stories are true to life or just made up.

Pastor Schmitt (1991)
Born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Paul and Joan (nee Hillman, born in Omaha, NE) Schmitt, Thomas attended Calvary Lutheran Church and School where he was baptized and confirmed in the faith by the Rev. Howard G. Barth (formerly of Mt. Calvary-Omaha), taught in the school by Esther and Harold Dunklau (of St. Paul-Arlington, NE (Now served by Rev. Rick Kanoy, formerly of Calvary-KC) ) and Neil Sandfort future Nebraska LCMS District Education Executive in Seward NE).
While in high school, Thomas was president of the youth group while (then) Vicar Luke Biggs future pastor of Messiah-Lincoln, NE) served Calvary; and between terms at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis he served Calvary as a student under the supervision of Rev. Albert G. Engler (formerly of Zion-Omaha, NE 1970-1984). Still, it came as a surprise that he, too should get called to enter the Calvary-Kansas City/Nebraska vortex , receiving a call from his first parish in Rugby and Willow City, ND to Zion in 1997.
Pastor Schmitt was ordained into the Office of the Holy Ministry on June 23, 1991 at St. Paul, Willow City. While in North Dakota, Thomas served as Zone LWML Pastoral Counselor; Circuit Counselor, and District LLL Pastoral Advisor. It was in this role with the LLL that his travels took him to Grand Rapids, MI where he met his wife to be, Mary Bauman, then teacher at Immanuel-Marshfield, WI. Thomas was installed at Zion on June 15, 1997 and married on July 19 that same year in Mary’s home town of Merrill, WI.
