“For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.  And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying  in a manger." Luke 2:11-12

Merry Christmas. Here is the first sermon that points directly to Christ, preached by the Angels on the day of His birth. The angels, in the skies over the fields of Bethlehem, tell the shepherds WHO Jesus is: “A Savior, who is Christ the Lord” WHAT He has done, “He is born.” and WHERE to find Him: “Wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.” From then on, all preaching of Christ does the same thing—telling us W HO Jesus is, W HA T He has done for us and W HERE we may find and receive Him.

WHO is He?
He is the Son of God, and the Son of David. He is true God and true man, born of the Virgin. He is Immanuel, God-with-us (The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth), and the Prince of Peace and the Light of the World and the Bread of Life. He is the Son of God and the Son of Man. He is Jesus, who saves His people from their sins (Matthew 1).

WHAT has He done?
He has been born for you. He was baptized for you (Matthew 3). He faced temptation for you. He taught and prayed and preached and healed for you. He was arrested for you, beaten for you, mocked for you, suffered for you and died for you. He rose for you and ascended for you. He has accomplished your salvation, ransomed you from the devil and the grave. He has overcome death for you and brought you the peace of God (John 20).

WHERE is He to be found?
There, in a manger. In the arms of the Virgin. In the Jordan River. In Capernaum, Nazareth, Nain, Jericho and Jerusalem. In the hall of the High Priest. In the Praetorium of the Governor. On the cross. In the tomb. Alive among His disciples. At the right hand of God. At the holy font. In His Word, the Scriptures. At the altar with His Body and Blood for you to eat and drink. You can't miss Him there. He's there for you, so you may be certain that what He has done was done for you.

Today is born this day, in the city of David, a Savior which is Christ the Lord, in the manger, in the swaddling clothes. On the cross. In His church. The Son of God, born for you. Merry Christmas in the gift of God's Son.

Angels sang about His birth,
Wise Men sought and found Him;
Heaven’s star shone brightly forth
Glory all around Him.
Shepherds saw the wondrous sight,
Heard the angels singing;
All the plains were lit that night,
All the hills were ringing. (L SB 374:2)
