“Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” (Genesis 22)
In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Heart breaking words that God declares to Abraham. To offer his son, his only son as a sacrifice on the mountain. But God, you promised to give me a son from my own body. God, you promised my children would be as numerous as the stars in the sky.
There is a clash between what he hears and what he knows. Abraham hears the Word and goes as God told him. Abraham does all this in faith. “I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.” (Gen. 22)
Abraham lays the wood upon Isaac's shoulders. This is a picture of what God the Father will do to His Son, His one and only Son. The wood of the Cross laid on Jesus shoulders, carrying the sin of the world.
Isaac has gone many times with his father to worship the Lord. He knows what is needed. But this time something is missing. Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” (Gen. 22)
In order to worship the Lord the sacrifice is required. Abraham's answer is filled with faith in God to provide the lamb. Abraham binds his son, lays him on the altar and draws the knife to have the blood run. Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son.But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” (Gen. 22) STOP! The Lord would not have him sacrifice his son, his one and only son.
God Himself will provide the Lamb. The Lord provides in giving JESUS for you. Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! (John 1) The altar is the Cross. JESUS is the Lamb of God provided for you. God will NOT STOP in the sacrifice of his son, his only and only son.
Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. (Isaiah 53)
You, too, are Abraham's descendants. Not by birth, but by faith in Christ. By Jesus’ once for all sacrifice. In faith we gather to worship Christ Crucified and Risen for you. JESUS does all the work for your salvation. The Lord provides. That in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith. (Gal. 3) God's Promises are for you to believe. Faith in Christ gives life eternal. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.
